HMS Current Events
One article and corresponding write-up will be due from every student every unit (or twice per unit for longer units). Below will explain the process for completing the requirement and when the due dates are. The due dates for these assignments will be clear.
Instructions
- The student will need to find a news article or entry from a scientific journal that deals with a topic the class is currently talking about. The article can come from the internet, newspaper, and/or magazines. If the article comes from the internet or the newspaper, it cannot be older than six (6) months. If the article comes from a magazine, it cannot be older than two (2) years. (A good website is www.sciencedaily.com)
- Once an article is found, the student will need to read the article and write TWO paragraphs. When the student writes the paragraphs, they can do it one of two ways:
- TYPE it on the computer: 12 pt. font, times new roman, doubled space
- WRITE it on paper: blue or black ink, neat, able to read (by the teacher)
- The paragraph topics are the following:
- 1st Paragraph: This is a summary paragraph of the article. In a summary, the student should answer the who, the what, the when, the where, the why, and the how.
- 2nd Paragraph: In this paragraph, the student will express their opinion on the article by answering the following:
- Opinion on the article (did you like the article or not and why?)
- How could this article affect people and affect them?
- Why is this article a science article?
- Does this article relate to the class and justify your reason?
- A paragraph has a minimal of seven (7) complete sentences. The sentences should have a flow to them, were anyone will understand what is trying to be expressed.

- All Summary questions addressed—25pts
- A paragraph with minimal grammar errors—10pts

- Date Published—5pts
- Source that Published it—5pts
